What does your reflection show you?

Things you can tell by looking at my body:

It has stretched

Things you can’t tell by looking at my body:

It can run and jump

It can lift heavy things with ease

It has healed itself of every disease it’s ever encountered

It withstood an incredibly intense vaginal delivery

It has experienced prolapse as a result of all the work it’s done carrying and birthing babies

It has been to the brink of malnourishment and survived

It has survived on the absolute bare minimum of rest and still managed to sway three kids to soothe them

It has given warmth and physical support to my loves (big and small)

It has recovered from two c-sections and nourished babies for years after

It has soared through the skies

It has leapt out of planes, jumped off cliffs, hiked up mountains and danced through the nights

They’re just the physical things it’s done. That still doesn’t show you who I am as a woman, a friend, a mother or a wife. It's so easy to get caught up in loathing our bodies or feeling forced to love them in the pursuit of body positivity.

Maybe we don't have to love the way we look, or hate the way we look. Maybe we can be ok with the fact that our bodies are a vessel for our spirit and our soul that lives within. Maybe we can feed them well and keep them healthy and shift our energy to savouring all of the moments of life we have in these bodies, rather than endlessly trying to 'fix' them.

It’s nice to feel good in the skin you’re in, but don’t forget that it doesn’t define you x
